PAZ Software has begun the process of re-writing the more popular applications for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. Counter 4.0 is now available for Windows and natively for Mac OS X and will be available for Linux soon. More titles will follow. PAZ Software develops specialty scientific software solutions. Most titles on this site operate seamlessly in OSX with Classic. Although the software is specifically for MacOS, all input and output (data and graphics files) are cross-platform (i.e. compatible with Mac, Windows, Unix, etc.). PAZ software applications were developed for geological, biostratigraphic and earth science needs, however, they are often purchased and used for a broad range of applications in other disciplines.

Counter 4.0 for Windows and Mac OSX: Now Counter is available for Windows and native in Mac OSX: Data acquisition, counting pollen, fossils, diatoms, nannofossils, forams. Counter 4.0 is a new and improved, complete re-write from the ground up based on Counter 3.5 for Mac System 9.2.2 and older. Version 4.0 will be available for Linux soon. Version 3.5 is still available for Mac System 9.2.2.

Counter 3.5 and WellPlot 3.5 provide data acquisition, quality control, data analysis, visualization and presentation capabilities. This is an excellent software solution for biostratigraphers. Clients comments and suggestions for features and improvements are often very quickly implemented.

Counter 4.0 for Windows & Mac OSX is data acquisition and quality control software that emulates an expanded manual mechanical counter. Counter can speak the category name as it is tallied. Users report that touch-typing with speech feedback allows a 4X increase in the number of samples counted. Spreadsheet-like functions include: Add, insert, and delete for both samples and categories; Edit counts for any category in any sample at any time; Edit any category name or sample name at any time.Other functions: Add or subtract counts by 1 or 10 counts per click; Distinct audible sounds for add and subtract; User defined Interval alert (audible tone); Multiply counts above a cut-off (good for estimating the dominants while counting the rare and common). Count data is saved as a tab-delimited text file with sample names occupying the first column, categories (species names) in the first row and count data in the intersecting matrix of cells. The data file may be opened with any spreadsheet, word processor, statistics or plotting application. Text files are saved as Excel text spreadsheets.
Counter features an unlimited number of counts and automatic totaling. Each time you click a category button or type a hotkey, Counter tallies a count for that category and speaks the category name. An audible tone may also be generated each time a count is tallied, and a distinct "alert" tone is generated each time the total tally reaches a multiple of the alert interval. Errors may be subtracted from any category tally (and the count total), simply, by switching to the subtract mode. Multiple data files, each in its own window, may be open simultaneously. Windows may span across multiple monitors.

WellPlot 3.5 is a stratigraphic data analysis and charting application that plots multiple categories (up to 600 columns) against depth or sequence of samples. Data is read directly from spreadsheets. Sums, percentage and concentration data may be calculated and saved. Plot types include: multi-track x-y line plots (log style), butterfly diagrams, bar charts (log style), interval histogram range charts, range-through charts, percent events plots and cumulative data plots. The Y-axis (depth) can be scaled to depth or sequential samples. The X-axis can be normal (arithmetic) or LOG scale, and absolute or normalized. Exaggeration may be applied to low abundance groups. The charts can be scaled to any horizontal and vertical dimensions. Wall-size charts to page-size charts. Sort categories by first occurrence, last occurrence, alphabetically, by maxima, by species codes or as originally entered. Use WellPlot to plot geochemical or petrological data.
